Hebrews 4 - The Word of God
With the advent of the printing press, hand-lettered bibles are a thing of the past. Surprisingly, the craft is not lost, though. Here is a link to the Saint John's Bible; a current work of hand-lettered and illustrated craft. After five years, the text is still being done, one volume at a time. Amazing.
My lettering skills fall short in comparison, but so is the time I can devote. I have painted in Hebrews 4:12, using a double-layered approach to provide some depth. I first used a dark reddish-brown for the main form, then highlighted in a lighter tint.
The simple painted sketch of the two outer panels was done as the lettering dried between layers. I want to keep a monochromatic theme in these spaces, so I am debating whether to carry the same colors into the final work or to change values slightly to bring emphasis.
