Brown and White

I am working on the second canvas of my series on dreams, and plan to finish the underpainting of both before moving on to the color glazes.

When painting in burnt umber and white, I tend to build from the inside out; this leaves me a space for blending. I then go back and clean up the lines defining the current shape. The rough edges on the left side show an area that has yet to be cut into a more specific line. Creating a monochromatic underpainting helps build composition as revisions are simple and nothing is fully committed until I am ready.
